The flag went up.
One minute.
One minute and ten seconds he reminded himself.
“Start me at thirty seconds” he told his dad.
His father fed the belt down between the seat and the engine.
He reached around and turned on the chain oiler.
Two turns, he didn’t forget this time.
He slid forward in the seat and pulled his jacket down.
Karts in the first split started firing up.
The starter lowered the flag to halfway – thirty seconds.
He nodded to his dad.
The belt squealed for a second and the engine started turning over.
He put his hand over the carb inlet.
Fuel splashed on his fingers.
The engine fired sounding rough, loaded up.
He turned the high-speed needle in and the engine cleaned out.
Don’t want to hurt the clutch, keep the revs down.
The first wave pulled out.
The guy next to him pulled out about 3 feet.
Then stopped and his crew pulled him back.
He rev’ed the engine higher.
His dad held out his hand with all five fingers out.
Four fingers.
Three fingers.
Two.
One.
The flag dropped.
